Well not really, it's easy to modify the death threshold and keep hitpoints. I mean -10 is an arbitrary number anyway, and isn't in any way integral to the hit point system. It could be -max HP, or -level*5 or whatever the hell you wanted really.
And you're still playing wtih the same hit points rule, it just takes more damage to die.
Basically you can make all those changes without writing a new injury system. You can leave enemy damage the same, and your game now becomes a lot less deadly, and you're still running on the same damage/hit point system that D&D works on with a few house rules.
